"The cloud did not move. I checked three times."
"I observed them on a Tuesday. She was reading a book she had already finished. He was watching a cloud that did not move for forty minutes."
"At some point they spoke. I could not hear what was said. The seabirds went quiet. This may be coincidence."
"She laughed. He looked like someone who had just understood something that had been explained to him many times before."
"The tide came in. This is the part I cannot explain. The tide came in at exactly the right moment."
They decided to do it again. Formally this time. With witnesses.

There is no dress code. Wear what you would wear to something important at the sea.

A series of images
that are almost metaphors.
The light doing something unrepeatable.
At approximately 5:30 pm, the light on this particular stretch of coast does a thing that cannot be adequately described. Photographers have tried. The photographs are always slightly wrong.
The tide arriving at exactly the right moment.
We did not arrange this. We asked. The sea confirmed. The tide table for June 14 shows high tide at 4:47 pm. We have scheduled the vows accordingly.
People you recognize and people who feel familiar.
The guest list is small. Everyone on it has, at some point, made Mara or Elias feel less alone in the world. You are on it.
A moment when the ocean agrees.
There is a moment in every beach ceremony when the ocean does something — a wave, a silence, a bird — that seems to endorse what is happening on shore. We have been told to expect this.
